After we conducting our pilot survey and determined how we will conduct our project, finally we start!

Measuring pelagic thresher shark in Kutaraja fishing port

In July 2019 the project officially begun. We started with pilot survey and continue with landing monitoring and social-economic survey.

Our first objective is to to establish a comprehensive fisheries landing databases for two important thresher sharks targeted and by-catch fisheries sites in Aceh. Landing monitoring data will be collected in both sites from fished specimens of pelagic thresher shark each day between July 2019 and December 2020 at the Kutaraja and Ujong Serangga fishing port. We work with trained enumerators; Munawir and Herman in Kutaraja and Ujong Serangga respectively, to collect biological and operational information from each catch based on accepted monitoring and species identification methods.

After the data collected, we will conduct statistical modelling of catch per unit effort (CPUE) of pelagic thresher sharks against operational fishing variables in order to identify fishing characteristics. In Kutaraja, we will determine if the catches are associated with a higher risk of pelagic thresher shark by-catch while in Ujong Serangga, we will determine the magnitude of targeted shark fisheries.

Our second objective is to establish the baseline socio-economic data on the role and value of pelagic thresher shark fisheries for livelihoods and food security in targeted fisheries site in South-west Aceh. The social-economic survey will be conducted for three months in Blang Pidie from January-March 2020. We will conduct an assessment regarding the role and value of pelagic thresher sharks and their derivative products in local livelihoods and food security.

In the end of the project, we will use the biological and social-economic information to assess the sustainability of the fisheries in both sites and formulate recommendation for better management.
