Chapter 8 - Call for action!

On February 11, 2020, we were attending a stakeholder meeting for provincial shark and ray conservation in Aceh. This meeting attended by government officials, universities and environmental organization that concerns in sharks and rays conservation.

In this meeting, we talk about many different aspects in sharks and rays fisheries and trade in Indonesia especially in Aceh province that includes: update in national regulation, trade management, fisheries profile and management strategies.

In this event, we are honoured to share our thresher shark conservation project in Aceh. Our presentation titled "Southwest Aceh Shark and Rays Fisheries Profile" presented by Muhammad Ichsan and Herman. We talked about the hark and ray status in SW Aceh also the challenges and recommendation to reduce the species utilization. This project supported by Province government, ZSL EDGE Fellowship and WCS-Indonesia Program.

In the last session, we committed to conducting some activities in 2020 including strengthening Data and Information in trade, landing monitoring and social-economy; research and development collaboration with local universities; strengthening awareness; strengthening Aceh shark and ray management taskforce and capacity building activities involving governments, NGOs, communities and universities in Aceh.

In the future, with commitments and systematic works from all stakeholders, we aim for better management in shark and ray conservation, particularly in reducing thresher shark capture and utilization in the province.
